Strong link between health and attainment
The links between pupil health and wellbeing and attainment are increasingly recognised and backed up by robust evidence. A recent paper published by Public Health England: The link between pupil health and wellbeing and attainment: A briefing for headteachers, governors and staff in education settings (November 2014) presented the following evidence:
- Pupils with better health and wellbeing are likely to achieve better academically
- Effective social and emotional competencies are associated with greater health and wellbeing, and better achievement
- The culture, ethos and environment of a school influences the health and wellbeing of pupils and their readiness to learn
- A positive association exists between academic attainment and physical activity levels of pupils

Healthy School wins Public Health Minister's Award
On 3 March 2015, Public Health Minister, Jane Ellison held an event at the House of Commons to celebrate Excellence in Public Health and Wellbeing. One of our Healthy Schools London Gold Award winning schools, Charlton Manor Primary School, Greenwich received an Award at this event for their commitment to cookery, gardening and outdoor learning that they incorporate into their whole school approach to health and wellbeing. Headteacher, Tim Baker collected the Award.

Barking and Dagenham celebration event
A Healthy Schools celebration event took place in Barking and Dagenham on 14 January 2015 to showcase the inspiring work being done in schools to raise health and wellbeing awareness among children and their families to help them develop healthy habits for life. Speakers included Councillor Evelyn Carpenter, Cabinet Member for Education and Schools who praised schools for their hard work and reinforced the evidence that healthier children achieve more academically. Council leader Councillor Darren Rodwell presented the awards, along with borough Mayor Cllr Elizabeth Kangethe.

New Ofsted Inspection Framework from Sept 2015
Under the new Common Inspection Framework, a judgement on Personal Development, Behaviour and Welfare will be included for the first time from September 2015. As part of reaching this judgement, inspectors will look at the extent to which schools are successfully supporting pupils to gain 'knowledge of how to keep themselves healthy including through exercising and healthy eating'. The addition of this to the inspection framework (as opposed to guidance) means that inspectors will be expected to place a greater emphasis on this issue than before. Inspectors will look for a culture or ethos of exercise and healthy eating throughout their entire inspection visit. Being part of Healthy Schools London and achieving the HSL Bronze Award demonstrates a school's commitment to pupil health and wellbeing. Furthermore, the Healthy Schools London (HSL) Review Tool (Bronze Award) provides the evidence of how the school is addressing this issue for Ofsted.
