The Mayor thanks London schools

Over 250 people joined together to celebrate the first year of the Mayor's Healthy Schools London programme in The Chamber at City Hall. Mayor of London, Boris Johnson kicked off the celebrations by thanking all schools and Boroughs involved in Healthy Schools London. He underlined the importance of health and wellbeing to learning and achievement at school. The Mayor then introduced a dance performance by Ravenstone Primary School, LB Wandsworth which was full of energy and enthusiasm.

Support for Healthy Schools London

The event was chaired by Deputy Mayor, Victoria Borwick who is a great advocate for the work of Healthy Schools London and was a key driver behind the broadening of the Healthy Schools London Silver and Gold Awards to include Emotional Health and Wellbeing and PSHCEE. We were fortunate to have great support on the day from experts from the fields of Education, Sport and Physical Activity, Public Health and School Food. Speakers on the day were:

  • Cllr Victoria Borwick, Londonwide Assembly Member Deputy Mayor of London
  • Prof Greg Whyte, Professor of Applied Sport & Exercise Science, Liverpool John Moores University; Director of Performance, The Centre for Health and Human Performance
  • Myles Bremner, Director of School Food Plan
  • Dr Yvonne Doyle, Regional Director, Public Health England, London
  • John Martin - Principal Bacon’s College, Southwark

We are very grateful for their support.

Healthy Schools London Bronze, Silver and Gold Award Schools

We currently have 1030 London schools that have registered to take part in Healthy Schools London and 377 schools have achieved a HSL Bronze Award. 38 schools have achieved a Silver Award and 2 schools have achieved a Gold Award. As we were unable to invite all of the schools that had achieved a Bronze Award to the celebration event, we produced a map detailing all of those schools. You can check if your school is taking part or has achieved a Bronze Award by going to: www.london.gov.uk/what-we-do/health/healthy-schools-london/awards//get-award/schools-taking-part . All Silver and Gold Award winners were invited to received their Awards in person.

The Big Dance Pledge is a 3 minute piece of simple dance moves for everyone to learn across the world and dance simultaneously on 16 May 2014 in
celebration of the Commonwealth Games. This free educational resource for teachers can be downloaded on 14 January from:   http://bigdance.org.uk/big_dance_pledge.php

The main aim is for schools and communities to join together by being active, happy and healthy through dance and also pledge to do an extra 100 minutes of dance during Big Dance Week. Big Dance is a UK-wide dance festival from 5-13 July 2014 so we hope your school is inspired to do an extra 20 minutes of dance each day that week! Please let us know what your plans are for learning the Big Dance Pledge – maybe in PE, your dance club or simply in the playground.

The Big Dance Pledge is a partnership with Scottish Ballet and the British Council's Schools Online programme and can help towards your Healthy Schools London Award. Don’t miss this great opportunity to be part of this great active programme and help pupils achieve their 60 minutes a day!
