Healthy Schools Ratings Scheme (DfE) and Healthy Schools London (HSL)

Launched by the Department for Education (DfE) in July 2019 as a pilot, the Healthy Schools Ratings Scheme (HSRS) is part of the Government’s childhood obesity plan with a focus on healthy eating and physical activity. Schools complete a self-assessment tool with questions about physical activity and school food and receive a rating based on their answers. Only schools that have taken part in the Active Lives Children and Young People survey (managed by Sport England and London Sport) can access the Healthy Schools Rating Scheme Self-Assessment Tool.

The Healthy Schools Ratings Scheme is not replacing the Healthy Schools London programme.

HSL is exploring with DfE how HSL and the HSRS can work together. We will be providing more information about the HSRS during the Autumn Term 2019. Please contact your Healthy Schools Borough Lead for further information.

HSL is a comprehensive approach to supporting pupil health and wellbeing that includes:

  • Healthy Eating

  • Physical Activity

  • Personal Social Health and Economic Education (PSHEE)

  • Emotional Wellbeing and Mental Health

Information provided by schools to achieve Healthy Schools London Awards may be used to support the completion of the HSRS self-assessment tool.
